The 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition are two SUVs on a mission for full-size comfort and towing performance. Which is the best hauler for your crew, their stuff, and the family boat? Our comparison guide takes a closer look.
Quietest, Comfiest Road-Tripper: 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe
You can pack your entire family, their stuff, and even a few pets into the Tahoe and still have room for more. This full-size SUV is all about road-trip comfort too, with plush, supportive seats and an accessible third row. Moreover, the Tahoe delivers smooth, quiet comfort, effortlessly keeping noise at bay and smoothing out any bumps in the road.
Like the Tahoe, the Ford Expedition is big and comfortable. Even the third row offers impressive, adult-friendly legroom. However, the ride can feel a little jittery at times—it’s certainly not as smooth an operator as the Tahoe.
Family-Friendliest Tech Lineup: 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe
If you can’t get anywhere without your smartphone, the Tahoe has you covered. This full-size SUV comes standard with every imaginable connection, from an in-cabin Wi-Fi hotspot to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. You can use your phone’s maps app (and other apps, like music) on the standard 8-inch touchscreen, which keeps you from distraction. There are even five standard USB ports spread throughout the cabin, keeping devices charged all the way to Grandma’s house.
The Expedition is a close second in this category. Ford’s SYNC 3 infotainment system scores high marks for usability and its Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Unfortunately, though, you only get four standard USB ports and there’s no Wi-Fi on offer.
Tows the Biggest Boat: 2019 Ford Expedition
The Expedition has the Tahoe beat here. Properly equipped, the Expedition tows max loads of 9,300 pounds. By comparison, the Tahoe maxes out at 8,400 pounds. If your boat is any bigger, you’re going to need the Expedition. (Though, let’s face it, most drivers will be perfectly happy with 8,400 pounds’ worth of towing capabilities.)
Most Ingenious Safety: 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe
Chevy has the market cornered when it comes to standard safety gear. Every 2019 Tahoe features the automaker’s OnStar emergency telematics system, which can send for help after an accident or whenever you need roadside assistances. Talk about peace of mind.
But the fun doesn’t stop there. High-tech safety aids, like forward collision and lane departure warning are optional on the base Tahoe LS and standard for the rest of the lineup. Back on the Expedition, you have to add the Driver Assistance package to even think about enjoying this potentially lifesaving equipment.
The Ford Expedition might be a little more robust, but the 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe is the all-around best family hauler. On long trips, you’ll love this full-size SUV for its livable cabin, standard smartphone integration, high-tech safety gear, and massive towing capabilities.
